Flag Day is a special day for Americans to celebrate the adoption of the United States flag on June 14, 1777, by the Continental Congress. It's a day to show respect for the flag and its meaning, and a day to honor the brave men and women who have defended it. This year, at J.Randal Insurance Agency, we're excited to be joining in the celebration of Flag Day by hosting an event to honor the flag and all it represents. In this blog post, we'll share some interesting facts about Flag Day and the American flag, as well as how we plan to celebrate this special day.
The American flag has gone through many changes over the years. It started with just 13 stars and 13 stripes, representing the original 13 colonies. As more states were added to the country, more stars were added to the flag. Today, the flag has 50 stars, each one representing one of the 50 states. The flag still has the original 13 stripes, representing the original 13 colonies. The colors of the flag, red, white, and blue, have also been given meaning. Red represents valor and bravery, white represents purity and innocence, and blue represents vigilance, perseverance, and justice.
It's also interesting to note that the design of the American Flag has seen several changes since its inception. The current version of the American Flag was designed in 1959, the 50th star was added to represent Hawaii's addition as a state.
Many people don't know that Flag Day isn't a federal holiday. It was officially recognized by President Woodrow Wilson in 1916, but it wasn't until 1949 that it became a permanent observance. It's been said that Bernard Cigrand, a small-town teacher from Wisconsin, was the father of Flag Day. He led the first observance of Flag Day in 1885, and he spent much of his life trying to get the day recognized as a national holiday.
There are several traditions that go hand-in-hand with Flag Day celebrations. One of them is the Annual Flag Retirement ceremony, where old and worn-out flags are respectfully disposed of through a dignified burning ceremony. This ceremony is a symbolic gesture of retiring the flag as it can no longer serve its purpose of representing the nation and its people. Other traditions involve parades, speeches, flag-raising, and saluting the flag by placing the right hand over the heart.
The American flag is a powerful symbol of freedom, democracy, and hope. It's also a symbol of the sacrifices that have been made to protect those values. At J.Randal Insurance Agency, we believe that it's important to take a moment to honor the flag and all it represents, not just on Flag Day but every day. We hope that our Flag Day celebration will inspire others to do the same.
